Night for Listening: Estate
Night for Listening: Estate was an evening of music curated by Alhena Katsof. A handful of musicians, poets and artists were invited to prepare and perform, in succession, a version of Bruno Martino and Bruno Brighetti’s song, Estate, made famous by João Gilberto. The event took place over 3 floors of an Upper East Side Brownstone. The performers were Daniel Arnow & Batya Sobel, Frank Lyon, Michael O’Neill & Sammy Tunis, Ellery Royston & Adam Bach and Geo Wyeth.
I decided to adapt Estate to the 60's pop song Love Is Strange, by Mickey & Sylvia, which was later included in the soundtrack to the 80's movie, Dirty Dancing.
As the audience turned toward us, we sat in the corner, Michael with a guitar, Sammy with a diary, each contemplating life, love and summer. We reached for a couple of beers from our cooler, and after a refreshing sip, began to sing:
